My name is Maria Clinton. I grew up in Arnold, California, a small town in the Gold Rush country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I attended high school in Angels Camp, the town Mark Twain famously wrote about in his short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.
I attended San Jose State University, graduating with an BA in English in 1990. I returned to earn my MA in Educational Leadership in 2004. I worked as an English and ESL teacher in San Jose for 18 years, teaching all levels of English, as well as becoming involved in the National Writing Project and the National Council of Teachers of English. I served as English department chair for several years at a newly opened high school, mentored teachers in my school and district, and worked with San Jose State University to organize service learning opportunities for university students.
In 2008, my family and I moved to Colorado, where I was fortunate enough to join the faculty of Northglenn High School STEM, in Northglenn, Colorado. At Northglenn, I primarily teach English 9 and AP English Language. I also advise the LINK Crew, which is a group of upperclassmen who run freshman orientation, and work to support 9th graders as they make the transition to high school.
The biggest highlights of my career have been helping to open Branham High School in San Jose, California, helping Northglenn High School transition into a successful STEM school, and contributing to several chapters in a writing textbook, Teaching Writing Grades 7-12 in an Era of Assessment: Passion and Practice.
The greatest highlights of my life, however, are my family, and the time I spend with them.
